Prepping for Your Toddler for Baby Number TWO
Communicate the news that you are expecting a new baby to your older children when you feel it is appropriate. When I told my my first child who was 3 years old at the time that she was going to be a big sister her response took my breath away. I told her we were going to have another girl she said “You can’t have the same as me.” WOW. Being of an age where she can contribute, we continually reinforced her role as a 'big girl' and the wonderful 'big sister' she will become. We engaged in discussions about potential names and her anticipated interactions with the baby.
Try to create enthusiasm in your eldest child regarding their impending role. Purchase a gift your older children can give to the new baby making them feel they are partipatintg not just observing.
